MAP 1
. Distribution of
Jacquemontia grisea
and
Jacquemontia staplesii
.
Distribution, Habitat and Conservation:
—Endemic to
Brazil
in the Espinhaço Range, in the Chapada Diamantina of
Bahia
in
Brazil
(Map 1), occurring in caatinga vegetation. Since there are no data on abundance, this species should be considered as data deficient (DD) according to the
IUCN (2001)
criteria.
Etymology:
—The epithet honours Dr. George Staples III, specialist in
Convolvulaceae
, who has contributed to the taxonomic revision of Brazilian species of
Jacquemontia
.
Observations:
—In Brazilian herbaria, specimens of this species were found misidentified as
Jacquemontia hallieriana
Ooststr
which is only known from the
type
. However,
J. staplesii
is significantly different based on the closely imbricate leaves that hide the inflorescences at the apices of the branches whereas in
J. hallieriana
the internodes are
1.5 cm
long leaving the inflorescences exposed.. Moreover, the leaves of
J. hallieriana
are larger (ca. 6 ×
4 cm
) and its outer sepals are slightly rhombic.
Jacquemontia hallieriana
also appears to have shorter petioles, with almost sessile leaves.
