Burmeistera xerampelina f. lilacina E.Wimm., Pflanzenr. IV. 276b: 147. 1943. Type :— COLOMBIA . Valle del Cauca :“Central-Kordilleren, Urwald am Río Bolo, 1100 m , Jun” (fl), E. Dryander 327 ( holotype : B, probably destroyed). Upright herbs or subshrubs, sometimes scandent or epiphytic, up to 1.5 m tall. Stem glabrous to sparsely puberulous. Petiole 3–12 mm long, glabrescent to sparsely puberulous; blade ovate, oblong or elliptic, 4–10 × 2.0– 4.4 cm , glabrous above, glabrous to scarcely puberulous beneath, base rounded to slightly cuneate, slightly asymmetric, apex acute to acuminate, margin subentire to sinuous, interrupted by 1 or 2 marginal to intramarginal hydathodes per cm, secondary veins 6 to 11 per side, slightly conspicuous beneath, intramarginal vein lacking. Peduncle 6–16 cm long, glabrous or very sparsely puberulous, ebracteolate. Hypanthium obconic, 7–12 × 4–6 mm , glabrous. Calyx lobes broadly ovate, 1.0–1.5 × 1.0– 1.5 mm , ascending, glabrous, basally spaced by sinuses up to 1 mm wide, apex acute to obtuse, margin entire, slightly sinuous, apex obtuse. Corolla green suffused with purple, glabrous except for the sparsely puberulous floral buds; tube 6–7 mm long, 2.0– 3.5 mm diameter at its mid- and distal portions, slightly inflated proximally; lobes narrowly ovate, straight or nearly so, apex acuminate; dorsal lobes 10–15 × 3–5 mm , lateral lobes 7–14 × 3–4 mm , ventral lobe 8–14 × 3 mm . Synandrium 1.9–2.4 cm long, exserted up to 8 mm ; filament tube 15–18 mm long, glabrous; anther tube 4–6 mm long, glabrous, ventral anthers barbate at preanthesis, with an apical tuft of white trichomes, these are deciduous during anthesis. Berries obovoid to oblong-cylindric, 10–28 × 10–14 mm , not inflated, glabrous, white or pink. Phenology: Burmeistera xerampelina has been collected from January to October. Distribution, ecology and conservation status: Burmeistera xerampelina is restricted to cloud forests of the Western Cordillera in the department of Valle del Cauca ( Colombia ), at elevations between 1100 and 2400 m . Following the IUCN´s (2022) criteria [B1(EOO) and B2(AOO), conditions (a) and (b), and C2(a)(i)], B. xerampelina qualifies as Critically Endangered, mainly due to the extremely low number of flowers per individual, the narrow distribution range, and the increased habitat destruction of its habitat. Notes: Burmeistera xerampelina is similar to B. salicifolia (see distinctive traits under the latter). Burmeistera nuda was described based on the specimen E. André 2636. There are two duplicates of this specimen, both deposited at Kew. The sheet [K000250862] is here designated as the lectotype , because the floral traits are more evident in this specimen. Neither the type specimen nor the original description of B. nuda shows distinctive traits to those found in B. xerampelina . Thus, it is reduced to the synonymy of the latter.
