Range and habitat.
Bahama
Is.;
Puerto Rico
(off N coast). The report of this species from the gulf of Morrosquillo,
Colombia
by Daccarett & Bossio (2011), if correct, would extend its distribution to that area of the southwestern Caribbean. Specimens have been reported from
9–
73 m
. The
9 m
depth report (off Sapphire Cay, Great
Bahama
Bank) was of 2 live-taken specimens buried
12 inches
[
24.5 cm
] in sand (see Pl. 82, Figs. 4–5). Another paired occurrence (off Gold Rock, Grand
Bahama
I.) also consisted of a large and small individual (see Pl. 82, Figs. 6–7). Both lots may represent male-female pairs, the smaller being the male. Also reported from in silt on reef at
27 m
depth (UF 470309).
Description.
Shell
medium (up to
37.6 mm
total length), broadly fusiform truncated anteriorly; whorls up to 11¾ total, turreted, last whorl about 58% of total shell length; sutures appressed. Aperture narrow, anterior canal short, distinct; shell sculpture of prominent ribs.
Protoconch
of approximately 2 smooth round whorls.
Axial sculpture
of strong, ridge-crested ribs that run from suture-to-suture, abruptly reduced in the sulcus such that they appear to end there; evanesce on the shell base at the anterior fasciole. Ribs wider than their interspaces, number 12 on the penultimate and 8–9 on the last whorl to the varix.
Varix
large, broad, and hump-like, about ⅓-turn from the edge of the outer lip.
Spiral sculpture
consists of a microsculpture of well-spaced fine grooves or ridges, made jagged by intersection of dense growth striae forming rows of narrow rectangular axially-aligned pits. SEM images of the shell surface microsculpture appear in Pl. 65,
Figs. 1
,
2
. Spiral grooves are heavier on anterior fasciole, roughened by growth striae but without pits.
Sulcus
distinct, about ⅓-whorl in height, with reduced, narrowed ribs, curved to reflect outline of sinus.
Outer lip
thin, flattened from the varix to lip’s edge with sometimes numerous strengthening axial folds, the largest aligned under the anal sinus. Lip edge smooth, not toothed, forming a low arc from the anal sinus to anterior canal; edge flexed out under anal sinus, stromboid notch a simple ruffle of the lip’s edge.
Anal sinus
a deep U-shaped notch on whorl shoulder close to the suture, parietal lobe on one side of sinus, and with inner edge flared up and outward flex of outer lip, sinus appears spout-like.
Inner lip
recumbent, relatively wide, thick anteriorly, thin on parietal wall, and formed into a parietal lobe posteriorly.
Anterior canal
distinctly formed, short, wide, open, notched at its end; with a swollen, slightly twisted fasciole.
Color
white with a broad, continuous brownish orange to chestnut brown central spiral band. The band’s color may extend the length of the intercostal space, beyond the boundaries of the band, as solid lines or as spots at shoulder level. All-white forms are known.
Remarks.
Taxonomy
.
Fenimorea janetae
is the
type
of the genus. Characters that distinguish
Fenimorea
from other genera are discussed in the introductory paragraph above.
Variability.
The six measured specimens examined for this work have an average total length of
33.78 mm
(
30.7–37.6 mm
) and an average W/
L ratio
of 0.384. Two completely white specimens are known and figured in the plate. The width of the central band varies among specimens; the
holotype
representing an example of the broadest seen to date. A specimen with a narrower band is depicted in Sunderland (1999: 16).
Identification.
Some other species are incorrectly identified as
F. j a ne t ae
, probably because of the rarity of
F. janetae
and hence lack of examples for comparison. Some of the species with which it is confused include
F. sunderlandi
(Petuch, 1987)
,
F. kathyae
Tippett, 1995
, and
Decoradrillia pulchella
(Reeve, 1845)
. From
F. sunderlandi
it differs in being smaller, in usually having more angular shoulders, broader ribs, and in having a different color pattern. The broad chestnut-brown central band of
F. j an e t a e
is continuous, overriding rib crests. The central band in
F. sunderlandi
is usually confined to the rib interspaces. Also
F. sunderlandi
has a narrow second spiral band, fainter in color, just above the main one, which is absent in
F. j a ne t ae
. From
F. kathyae
it differs in having more angular shoulders, ridged, not round-crested ribs, and has a different color central band, chestnut brown not orange-red. From
D. pulchella
it differs in being larger, having more ribs, and being a chestnut-brown color, not brown, pink and rose. The pattern of coloration also differs;
D. pulchella
has two dark-colored mid-whorl spiral bands, one narrow and the other wide, usually broken by the rib crests, which differs from the single broad band of
F. j a ne t ae
. See under
F. t art aneata
for differences from that newly described species.
