DIAGNOSIS. — Pycnodontid fishes with the following unique combination of primitive and derived characters: premaxillary and dentary teeth barely incisiform, not
sensu stricto
; neural and haemal corresponding arcocentra surrounding notochord partially to completely; neural and haemal adjacent arcocentra in complex to hyper-complex contact; hypochordal elements in caudal endoskeleton enlarged to hypertrophied; and scales present in abdominal and caudal regions of the body.
