According to recent phylogenetic studies in
Myrcia
s.l.
(Lucas
et al.
2011,
Santos 2014
), synonymization of
Marlierea
species
in
Myrcia
is recommended if monophyletic, intuitive taxonomic groups are desired (
Lucas & Sobral 2011
), which is the motivation for the new combination made here. In addition,
Myrcia foveolata
possesses free calyx lobes and a non-tearing hypanthium at anthesis, characters that conflict with the diagnostic features of
Marlierea
.
