DNA Barcode
: The DNA barcode sequences of
two specimens
of
Ophion fossulatus
are available at the BOLD systems database: sample id. NJP742/744, sequence id. LNU2578-21/2580-21.
Remarks
: Previously synonymized with
Ophion mocsaryi
Brauns, 1889
. Study of the
type
shows that this species belongs to the
Ophion parvulus
aggregate, which is characterized by the evenly curved radius and the weakly defined pleurosternal angles. Very similar to the Northern and Central European species
Ophion parvulus
Kriechbaumer
, but with the carination of propodeum more strongly raised, usually both anterior and posterior transverse carinae and central and lateral longitudinal carinae complete, and the pleurosternal angles more prominent. The two barcoding sequences that were extracted, cluster in BOLD with
O. parvulus
and obviously the two species are very closely related. The minor differences in morphology motivates the treatment of
O. fossulatus
as a separate species, but undoubtedly the taxonomy of the aggregate would benefit from a more thorough study using integrative methods.
