Carterocephalus dieckmanni soyosanus
Murayama, 1983
Entomotaxonomia
5(4): 284.
Labels
: “Soyosan (in Chinese character)/ S.

HOLOTYPE
(in red).”
A male specimen was designated as the
holotype
by
Murayama (1983)
, and the specimen was retrieved in
LBM
(
Figs. 37–39
; Dried Insect Database Reg. no. 1500022017).
The subspecific name
soyosanus
has not been popularized in
Korea
. No subspecific name is assigned to
dieckmanni
Graeser,
1888
in two recently published butterfly books in
Korea
(
Joo
et al.
1997
,
Kim 2002
).
Evans (1949)
recognized 4 subspecies of
dieckmanni
based on the difference in the central band on the ventral side of the hindwing. Even a brief examination of specimens tells us that some of the subspecific names should be synonymized due to clinal variation. After examining
57 specimens
(1 from
Russia
, 3 from
Korea
, 2 from
Northeast
China
, 13 from
North
China
, 37 from
West
China
, and 1 from
Myanmar
) in the
Tsukiyama Collection
, we found that the markings used by
Evans (1949)
as diagnostic characters to distinguish subspecies actually represent a clinal variation.
The
difference between
ssp.
dieckmanni
and
ssp.
gemmatus
Leech, 1891
is not clearly defined, and so is the difference between
ssp.
minor
Evans, 1932
and
ssp.
watsoni
Evans, 1932
.
Consequently
, no subspecific name is necessary for
Korean
populations of
dieckmanni
.
