Type locality: “trouvé sur la rive gauche du Jordain”. Meloe nudus Wollaston, 1864: 514 . Type locality: “ Habitat in Fuerteventura , rarissimus” ( Canary Islands ). The main morphological traits of M. coelatus were originally described by Reiche & Saulcy (1857) ; however, their description is relatively brief and does not include some important diagnostic characters such as those related to the shape of the protarsi or to the male genitalia. For practical purposes, and to facilitate the identification of the taxon, we provide below a detailed and expanded description based on the specimens studied.
