Oecetis ovata
sp. nov.
Figs 88–92
Diagnosis.
This species is distinguished from many of the Australasian
Oecetis
species by the absence of modified tergites on segment VIII and forward. The species resembles
O. complexa
Kimmins 1953
(in
Mosely & Kimmins 1953
) in the overall structure of the coxopodites, both in lateral and ventral views.
Oecetis ovata
is separated from
O. complexa
by the presence of a single dorsal branch of each coxopodite instead of two branches, and the dorsally curved main branch of each coxopodite.
Description, male.
Length of each forewing 4.8–6.0 mm (N = 18). Genitalia (
Figs 88–92
) slightly longer than tall in lateral view. Segment IX oriented vertically, almost drop-shaped in lateral view, ventral part about twice as long as dorsal part; in lateral view each side with dorsal part of anterior margin almost straight, ventral part convex; ventral half of posterior margin with tall, short, rounded lower posterolateral process of segment IX; upper posterolateral process of segment IX triangular, situated immediately below superior appendages; longitudinal apodeme evident anteriorly, inconspicuous posteriorly, located as continuation of lower margin of coxopodite; acrotergite of segment IX forming pair of minute, rounded clusters of punctations, each slightly wider than posterior spine in dorsal view; dorsal pair of semimembranous processes of segment IX very short, posteriorly oriented, situated close to each other; membranous areas absent. Main branch of tergum X forming pair of semimembranous lobes, about twice as long as superior appendages, directed posterad and gradually curving ventrad along their length, each with apex pointed; in dorsal view well separated from half-length, directed posterad. Posterior spine of tergum X originating basally on main branch, about as long as the main branch, weakly and gradually curving ventrad; in lateral and dorsal views slender along its length, setose apically. Superior appendages about half as long as main branches of tergum X, ovate in lateral and dorsal views. Coxopodites each forming tall dorsal plate at base, branching into strongly tapering and posteriorly curving dorsal branch; ventral branch about as thick as superior appendages, curving dorsad along its length, rounded apically; in ventral view posterior edge of basomesal plates produced into small pointed posterior processes. Phallus about as long as coxopodites, slightly taller posteriorly, with posteriorly oriented spines after mid-length; almost circular (onion-shaped) in ventral view, posterior spines located on left side, small boomerang-shaped spine located in anterior half right of midline.
