Ecology and distribution
: This species grows on shrubs and orange trees in primary and secondary forests and subparamo at
1320–3400 m
. It is known from South America (the Galápagos Islands,
Brazil
and
Venezuela
).
Remarks
: Previously
R. puiggarii
was known only from
Brazil
(
Kashiwadani & Kalb 1993
,
Gumboski 2016
) and the Galápagos Islands (
Aptroot & Bungartz 2007
).
Ramalina cumanensis
closely resembles
R. puiggarii
, but has shorter, uniseptate, ellipsoid spores (8–12 x 4–5 µm).
Ramalina camptospora
could also be confused with
R. puiggarii
, but the former species has marginal soralia with isidiform structures, and curved or sigmoid spores (12–14 x 4–4.5 µm). All three species lack medullary substances.
