Description.
Body elongate and laterally compressed; head variously depressed; head without scales; predorsal region naked or with a few small scales; body scales all cycloid or cycloid anteriorly, becoming ctenoid posteriorly; anterior nostril tubular, without process or tentacle from rim; pectoral girdle without flaps on anterior edge; pectoral fins with uppermost rays not free or with tips only slightly projecting from the membrane.
Head canals present or absent; if absent, pores generally replaced by enlarged papilla, especially within anterior head canal region with pores B, C, E, F; sensory papillae in a transverse pattern with six vertical rows; row 7 next to pore F or replacement papillae with 1 to several papillae; vertical row
