Body length 6.0–7.0 mm, wing length 5.2–6.0 mm. Head. Face rather strongly concave, strongly projected antero-ventrally; frontal prominence moderately developed (Fig. 1B). Width of vertex at anterior ocellus:width of head 1:3.4; the depth of occipital concavity ca. 1/4 of the width of an eye in dorsal view. Width of face:width of head 1:3.5. Face dorsally brown or blackish, ventrally yellow or variously brownish, densely pale pollinose dorsally. Gena yellow. Frons and vertex black or dark brown, more or less densely pollinose; lunula brown; the pile short, erect and pale. Occiput dull black. Antenna brown, scapus and pedicellus darker than the basoflagellomere; basoflagellomere oval, large; arista short pilose. Thorax. Colour reddish or brownish, usually darker dorsally than laterally, postpronotum and postalar callus yellow, all parts more or less densely pale pollinose, the rather dense pile adpressed and pale; scutellum semitriangular, ratio of length:width 0.5:1.0, pollinosity similar to that on scutum, the pile similar to that on the posterior part of scutum, a pair of long, thin setae at apical margin. Wing. Usually entirely darkened, stigma brownish. Legs. Pro- and mesoleg: yellow, tarsus gradually darkening from base to apex, at least tarsomeres 4 and 5 darker than the more basal ones. Metaleg: coxa brown; trochanter simple, yellow; femur brownish, basal 1/3 to basal 1/2 yellow; tibia rather straight, without apico-ventral tooth-like projection, brownish with a yellowish annulus medially; tarsus dark brown. Abdomen. Gradually broadening from anterior 1/3 of tergite II to posterior margin of tergite IV; length ratio of tergites I, II, III and IV 1 :3.9:2.9:2.6. Tergites shiny dark brown or black, the pile of tergites mainly brown, becoming longer and paler towards the lateral margin; tergite I laterally with long pale pile, without stronger setae; sternite I semicircular, reddish or yellow, sternites II and III small, elongate semi-rectangular; sternite IV large (similar to Fig. 5 C), semi-trapezoid, brown or paler posteriorly, with an asymmetrically placed sub-membranous cleft posteriorly, sometimes posterior margin more or less widely membranous, the rather short pile erect and pale occurring mainly on posterior part; sternites VI–VIII simple, black, the pile long and pale. Genitalia, Figs 6 A–D. Symmetrical. Note the ventral finger-like process on the apical part of aedeagus. FEMALE. Body length 5.5–6.6 mm , wing length 5.4–6.6 mm . Similar to male except the normal sexual dimorphism.Width of vertex at anterior ocellus:width of head 1:3.2. Width of face:width of head 1:3.1.Gena more or less yellow, densely pale pollinose. Frons and vertex rather uniformly pale pollinose, the pile pale. Abdomen: Length ratio of tergites I, II, III and IV 1 :2.1:1.9:1.4. Sternite I yellow, trapezoid; sternite II more or less reduced, elongated; sternite III trapezoid, posterior margin nearly as broad as anterior margin of sternite IV; sternite IV short, transverse. Material studied . 18♂ and 21♀, N.E. Burma , Kambaiti, 7000 ft . or 2000 m , 19.iv.–28.vi.1934 , R. Malaise ( SMNH , BMNH , NBC ). Discussion . Sphegina kumaoniensis was previously only known from the holotype from Kumaon District, Uttarachand, India ( Mutin 1998a ). It is similar to S. uncinata and the differences are discussed under the latter species.
