Liparia umbellata
Linnaeus
,
Mantissa Plantarum Altera
: 269. 1771
.
RCN: 5182.
Type not designated.
Original material: none traced.
Current name:
Liparia laevigata
(L.) Thunb.
(
Fabaceae
:
Faboideae
).
Note:
Linnaeus gave the alternative name
Borbonia umbellata
(seemingly not published elsewhere) in the protologue, and this was repeated in
Syst. Veg.
, ed. 13: 554 (1774). Neither this name nor
B. umbellata
is invalid, having been published pre-1953 (Art. 34.2). Dahlgren (in
Opera Bot.
22: 101. 1968), however, treated it as invalid ("should not be considered from the point of view of nomenclature"), and Schutte & Van Wyk (in
Taxon
43: 579. 1994) and Schutte (in
Nordic J. Bot.
17: 29. 1997) treat this as an illegitimate name, synonymous with
Liparia laevigata
(L.) Thunb.
