Type data: Smith (1854) described this species based on an undetermined number of females. Moure & Seabra (1962) mentioned that the type of this species was housed at NHMUK , providing information on the data label of provenance. Moure & Seabra’s interpretation can be treated as a valid lectotype designation, according to ICZN (1999) Article number 74.6. The specimen has the following data label: sponsa . Sm Columb. [handwritten]\ Colum [handwritten]\ [black-rimmed label] Holotype [printed] Centris sponsa Sm [handwritten] J. S. Moure [printed] 1957 [handwritten]\ Named as Centris sponsa Smith 1854 in W.W. Saunders colln. OX. UNI .MUS.NAT. HIST . ( OUMNH ). [printed]. Type locality: Colombia . Comments: According to the original description and the information on the label, the lectotype specimen was collected in Colombia , but this species has never been recorded in northern South America ( Vélez & Vivallo, 2018 ). Centris sponsa occurs in northeastern and southeastern Brazil ( Silveira et al ., 2002 ), so is very likely that the lectotype was mislabeled (as well as in C . maculifrons , see above) thus incorrectly recorded in Colombia . The type locality cannot be further narrowed down than to Colombia .
