Centris sponsa
Smith, 1854
. 374.
Type data:
Smith (1854)
described this species based on an undetermined number of females.
Moure & Seabra (1962)
mentioned that the type of this species was housed at
NHMUK
, providing information on the data label of provenance. Moure & Seabra’s interpretation can be treated as a valid
lectotype
designation, according to
ICZN
(1999) Article number 74.6. The specimen has the following data label:

Type
locality:
Colombia
.
Comments: According to the original description and the information on the label, the
lectotype
specimen was collected in
Colombia
, but this species has never been recorded in northern South America (
Vélez & Vivallo, 2018
).
Centris sponsa
occurs in northeastern and southeastern
Brazil
(
Silveira
et al
., 2002
), so is very likely that the
lectotype
was mislabeled (as well as in
C
.
maculifrons
, see above) thus incorrectly recorded in
Colombia
. The type locality cannot be further narrowed down than to
Colombia
.
