Monatsberichte der Königlich Preussischen Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin, 1877 [for 1876 ]: 703–714 . Valid name: Atelerix algirus (Lereboullet, 1842) Holotype : ZMB 5157, sex indet., skull and skin. This specimen was collected by Krug, apparently from Mayaguez, Puerto Rico where it had presumably been introduced. Comments: Hutterer (1983) favored the possibility that the type specimen was introduced into Puerto Rico from Spain or North Africa, as is known to be the case with Chlorocebus aethiops in the Cape Verde Islands and Atelerix algirus in the Canary Islands.
