Lectotype : SMF-42082, Tshiu-dsei-dsy near Hsi-ku-tsheng, Kansu (today's Zhouqu County, 33°48ʹN, 104°18ʹE, Gansu), China ; Potanin 206, Mlldff Colln. (measurements of lectotype : ewh 1.500, wh 8.625, h 8.1, diam. maj. 4.2, aph 3.0, apw 2.7). Whereabouts of additional type material unknown. Type locality. Tshiu-dsei-dsy near Hsi-gu-tshêng (Gansu). Material examined. HBUMM-05584: 2 fms, 829 m a.s.l., 32°51ʹ44.7ʹ N, 104°50ʹ48.2ʹ E, Hendan Village, on a nearby hill located on the opposite bank of Baishuijiang River and national highway o. 212, S. Gansu, China , 2006–IX–29 , leg. M. Wu, J. Liu, W. Zheng & L. Gao. Distribution. S. Gansu. Diagnosis. Shell with 7.500–8.625 whorls. Height 7.3–8.1, diam. maj. 3.5–4.2. Parietal tooth present. Columellar margin with one blunt tooth. Palatal wall with a distinct or indistinct ridge-like tooth. Re-description of shell. Cylindrical-conic; apex not acuminate or slightly but distinctly acuminate (in holotype ); dextral; thin-shelled; solid; opaque; glossy; with 7.500–7.750–8.000 whorls. Whorls spirally grooved (densely and evenly spaced near umbilical region, in lectotype ) or not (in newly collected specimens); convex. Embryonic shell smooth; not polished; with 1.375–1.438–1.500 whorls. Postnuclear whorls wrinkled. Suture simple. Last whorl straight in front; rounded at periphery. Shell 7.3–7.4–7.5 high; 3.5–3.6– 3.7 in diam. maj. Height/diam. maj. ratio 1.99–2.07–2.14. Aperture semicircular; oblique; its insertions separated; 2.8–2.8–2.8 high, 2.4–2.4–2.5 wide. Ratio of shell height to aperture height 2.62–2.65–2.68. Palatal tooth present, ridge-like, strongly (in lectotype ) or indistinctly (in newly collected specimens) developed. If distinct, palatal ridge-like tooth entering spirally approximately 0.250 whorl. Palatal margin rounded. Peristome expanded; thickened. Parietal callus indistinct. Angular tubercle present. Parietal tooth much larger than angular tubercle, extending inwards. Columellar margin reflexed; with one blunt tooth which is expanded inwards. Umbilicus more or less widely open. Shell, including upper whorls, uniformly corneous-brown; aperture white. Remarks. Möllendorff (1901) doesn’t mention a holotype or any other kind of types in his original description of Buliminus ( Pupopsis ) torquilla , nor does he indicate how many specimens belonged to the type series. Yen (1939: 90) refers to the only specimen of B. torquilla in colln. Möllendorff in SMF (SMF 42082) as the holotype of the taxon. Since there is no evidence that this specimen constitutes the entire type series, it is not the holotype but became, by Yen referring to it as the holotype , the lectotype of B. torquilla Möllendorff, 1901 (ICZN Art 74.6). Our newly collected material differs from the original description of P . torquilla in the weakness or absence of apertural teeth and in having fewer whorls.
