A soft scale belonging to the tribe Paralecaniini as presently understood. Body of adult female rather flat, oval and often somewhat pointed at both ends; stigmatic clefts each quite deep, with a sclerotised inner margin and only two stigmatic spines; margins of anal cleft closely adpressed. Dorsal derm becoming mildly sclerotised at maturity but with a strong sclerotisation around anterior margins of anal plates. Eyespots removed from margin, located dorsad to each scape. Dorsal setae finely spinose or setose. Dorsum with preopercular pores variously distributed or absent; also with dorsal simple pores and larger, apparently bilocular pores. Dorsal tubular ducts and submarginal tubercles absent. Anal plates each with a rounded outer margin and 4 small setae near apex. Marginal setae spinose or setose. Stigmatic setae spinose, usually with one on posterior margin of cleft and other on anterior margin. Venter with or without a marsupium. Ventral multilocular disc pores (each with 5–10 loculi) present or absent; when present, located more or less submedially on posterior 3 or 4 abdominal segments; ventral tubular ducts present or absent, restricted to submedially on abdominal segments VI and/or VII. Spiracular disc pores, mostly each with 5 loculi, usually present in broad bands. Antennae mainly 6 segmented (up to 8 segments in
M. durbanensis
and
M. proteae
), with setal distribution normal apart from absence of both a fleshy and a hair-like seta on segment IV on
M. marsupialis
and
M. ulubendulensis

for
M. durbanensis
and
M. proteae
). Legs well developed; without a tibio-tarsal articulatory sclerosis, and tibio-tarsal segmentation sometimes absent; claw digitules both broad; claws each without a denticle.
