Cancer simmonsi Curtiss, 1938: 176 , n. syn . The description of the carapace, live colour and habitat, “in sweet-water creeks” ( Curtiss 1938: 176 ) easily identifies this species with Varuna litterata ( Fabricius, 1798 ) (Varunidae) , a species common in French Polynesia ( Poupin & Juncker 2010 ). An allied species, V. yui Hwang & Takeda, 1986 , also occurs in the western part of the Pacific, but this species does not reach so far east ( Ng 1988 , 1998 ).
