Type :—[fossil leaves] Yamakayakusa, Ani-machi, Kita-Akita-gun Akita Prefecture , Japan ( holotype , AKMG-3132, Institute of Applied Geology, Mining College, Akita University, Akita , Japan-illustrated by Huzioka 1963 : pl. 35, fig. 10). Description :—Leaves elliptical, 4.5–5 cm long, 1.9–2.5 cm wide, acute at both basis and apex, entire, long-petiolate ( 6 mm long); venation of 7 pairs of secondary veinlets leave the midrib at angles of 45–40, camptodrome, tertiary venation reticulate or percurrent in the inter-secondary spaces (after Huzioka 1963 , modified). Occurrence :—Middle Miocene (Utto Formation); Eurasia (Japanese Archipelago). Eponymy :—Similar to extant Ilex rotunda Thunberg (in Murray 1784: 168 ). IFPNI :— 9DFB6C2F-7C4D-0AAB-DDD6-71C69F0A13C4 . Notes :—The fossil-species Ilex ohashii Huzioka (1963: 208) was not validly published since the type was not designated (Art. 40.1 of the ICN) [ two specimens from two locations were incorrectly cited as “ holotypes ”]. Huzioka (1963) related it to extant Ilex rotunda Thunberg , therefore, a new name is proposed to replace invalid I. ohashii .
