Discussion.
The monotypic genus
Kuauna
was erected for the species
Kuauna schmidi
Martins and Galileo, 2009
(
Fig. 8d
), which was described from a single specimen collected in
Venezuela
. Based on the illustrations in the original descriptions of both species,
K. schmidi
is
synonymized
with
Ophthalmocydrus semiorbifer
Aurivillius, 1925
(
Fig. 8
a-c), previously known only from
Colombia
. Thus,
Kuauna
Martins and Galileo, 2009
(
Lamiinae
:
Pteropliini
) becomes a
synonym
of
Ophthalmocydrus
Aurivillius, 1925
.
Specimens of
Ophthalmocydrus
are rare in collections. Close examination of a female specimen of
O. semiorbifer
(USNM)
revealed a combination of characters which do not fit the definition of
Onciderini
: antennomere IV longest; frons strongly convex; lower lobe of eyes distinctly large, about 5 times taller than genae; and elytral apices individually truncate, forming acute points at outer margins. Based on these morphological characters, the genus
Ophthalmocydrus
is
transferred
to
Pteropliini
and the known range of the genus is extended to
Venezuela
.
