Larval morphology of benthic and interstitial water mites (Acari: Hydrachnidia) from a Luxembourgian stream Author Martin, Peter text Zootaxa 2016 4139 4 451 480 journal article 10.11646/zootaxa.4139.4.1 f598f138-e21b-4064-869e-4a9fe5433c43 1175-5326 265489 5CC5B706-E9B5-4F63-A264-1131F56F5241 Sperchonopsis verrucosa (Protz, 1896) Remarks. There are descriptions of larval Sperchonopsis verrucosa of various levels of accuracy by Piersig (1896 / 99, 1901), Viets (1936) , Sparing (1959) and Martin (2000 , 2006). Characters used in the past for delimitation of larval Sperchonopsis Piersig, 1896 from Sperchon Kramer, 1877 ( Sparing 1959 ) turned out to be impractical for the Central European fauna (see Martin 2006). Also in more recent descriptions of other Sperchonopsis ( Sperchonopsis reducta Sokolow, 1940 ; Tuzovskij 2010a ) or Sperchon species (e.g. Sperchon hispidus Koenike, 1895 ; Tuzovskij 2010b ) no genera specific characters were found. Thus, the subdivision of the genera has to be questionable from the larval morphology point of view. In contrast to all other Sperchontidae larvae presented here the larva of Sperchonopsis verrucosa bears no seta C3 on CX-II.
