A review of Schiodtella formosana, with some remarks on the genus Schiodtella and description of a Japanese new species (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Cydnidae) Author Imura, Jimpei Author Ishikawa, Tadashi text Zootaxa 2009 2315 19 30 journal article 10.5281/zenodo.192017 5b26ee34-55ff-4da4-a200-444541506cd0 1175-5326 192017 The genus Schiodtella Signoret, 1882 Schiodtella Signoret, 1882 : 218 , type species by subsequent designation ( Lis 1994: 25 ): Stibaropus tabulatus Schiødte (syn. by Lis 1994 : 24 , with Stibaropus Dallas, 1851 ; restored by Lis 1999: 128). Neostibaropus Takano and Yanagihara, 1939 : 135, type species by monotypy: Neostibaropus formosanus Takano and Yanagihara (syn. by Esaki & Ishihara 1951 : 30, with Stibaropus Dallas, 1851 ; by Lis 1991a : 169, with Schiodtella Signoret, 1882 ). Lis (1991a) synonymized Neostibaropus with Schiodtella chiefly on the basis of having the four-segmented antennae, and afterwards, diagnosed the latter as “Head narrowed anteriorly, crenulated on margins; paraclypei with peg-like setae; clypeus parallel-sided or narrowed apically, shorter than paraclypei; antennae 4-segmented, second segment as long as or longer than the third; second rostral segment simple, without foliaceous lobe; apex of peritreme with small tooth-like process; margin of abdominal sternites straight in lateral parts; tarsi of all leg present” (Lis 1999). In addition to these characters, the 1+1 abdominal trichobothrial formula on the sternites III to VII is of taxonomic value for Schiodtella as documented by Lis and Hohol-Kilinkiewicz (2001) . As Neostibaropus is clearly ascertained to have no tarsi, although it has almost all characters above, it is tempting to restitute Neostibaropus from the synonymy as a valid genus. However, we believe that maintainance of Neostibaropus as a synonym of Schiodtella , based on a careful survey on the comprehensive morphology among the species of Schiodtella and its allies (see below for the detailed discussion), should be kept. Herein we provide a modified diagnosis for Schiodtella , and add some characters that are important to define it. Diagnosis. Head narrowed anteriorly, crenulated by fringe of peg-bearing tubercles on paraclypeal margin; clypeus parallel-sided or narrowed apically, shorter than paraclypei, with 2 subapical pegs. Antennae 4-segmented; segment II as long as or longer than segment III. Rostral segment II simple, without foliaceous lobe. Apical process of peritreme usually tooth-like, variable in length, but sometimes lacking. Tarsi present or absent. Posterior margin of abdominal sterna not insinuated; trichobothrial formula 1+1 on sternites III to VII ( Fig. 21 ). Penis with conjunctival appendage of various lengths; spermathecal duct with large, globate, distinctly pigmented dilation.
