C.F.Reed, Phytologia 17(4): 283. 1968 . = Thelypteris quadrangularis (Fée) Schelpe, J. S. African Bot. 30: 196. 1964 . Range:— Southeastern USA ; Antilles; Mexico to Bolivia and northern Argentina ; tropical and subtropical Africa and Asia. Ecology:— Common; terrestrial in humid forests, along forest edges, trails, and in pastures; to 2000 m . Notes:— Easily confused with Christella dentata , but distinguished by the petioles and rachises stramineous to tan; reduced proximal pinnae 1–4 pairs; costae abaxially with most hairs> 0.3 mm long with some exceeding 0.5 mm . The varietal name to be applied to Bolivian specimens is uncertain because of the pantropical distribution of this species. The epithet quadrangularis certainly applies, but it is uncertain whether this name is convarietal with C. hispidulus , the type of which is Asian.
