General coloration greyish black ( Fig. 12A ). Head. Dark grey, sometimes brownish on rostrum. Antenna about 3.5 times in male and 2.5 times in female as long as head. Scape greyish brown to dark grey. Pedicel and flagellum brown to dark brown; base of flagellomere 1 yellowish. Thorax. Dark grey, slightly brownish tinged on notum. Wing ( Fig. 12B ) tinged with brown, yellowish on anteri- or basal region, sparsely spotted with dark brown: anterior region with three spots, third one at crossvein r-r largest; fork of Rs and supernumerary m-cu distinctly seamed with dark brown. Legs mainly yellow; distal half of femora gradually dark toward tips; dark part occupying more than distal half on fore and mid femora. Halter pale yellow. Abdomen. Tergites dark brown to black, sternites dusky yellow with each caudal margin dark. Male terminalia ( Figs 12C–H ) with outer gonostylus laterally flattened, broad on distal part, bearing claw-shaped lobe at tip, outer surface covered with tiny teeth on distal and medial parts ( Figs 12D–E ). Paramere with mesal-apical lobe round spatula-shaped, about 1.5 times as long as wide and lateral lobe ( Fig. 12H ). Aedeagus straight, about seven times as long as wide in lateral view, directed posterodorsally ( Fig. 12G ). Apodeme of vesica directed anteroventrally ( Fig. 12G ). Measurements. Male (n = 19): body length: 6.8–8.3 mm ; wing length: 7.6–9.7 mm . Female (n = 6): body length: 7.1–10.0 mm; wing length: 7.0– 10.2 mm . Distribution. Japan ( Hokkaido , Honshu) ( Fig. 13F ). Remarks. This subspecies is distinguished from the nominotypical subspecies, E. u. ussuriana ( Alexander, 1933 ) , which is distributed in North Korea , Russian Far East, and Kuril Islands, by the following characters: prescutum without dark stripe (with indistinctly dark stripes in E. u. ussuriana ); fore and mid femora gradually dark toward tips, dark parts occupying more than distal halves (narrowly and abruptly black in E. u. ussuriana ); abdominal tergites uniformly dark brown to black (paler brown with dark caudal and lateral margins in E. u. ussuriana ); outer gonostylus with terminal spine central in position, dorsoapical corner more expanded ( Fig. 12E ) (terminal spine situated more dorsally, dorsoapical corner less developed in E. u. ussuriana ). As Savchenko (1983) noted, this species is very similar to E. trimaculata ( Zetterstedt, 1838 ) and could be a synonym. As far as comparing to a specimen of E. trimaculata from Finland , a few slight differences in male terminalia were observed: dorso-apical corner of outer gonostylus distinct, roundly produced (dorsal margin of outer gonostylus smooth, dorso-apical corner indistinct in E. trimaculata ); interbase with stem of spatula-shaped part narrow, about half as wide as distal part (broader, about 3/4 width of distal part in E. trimaculata ); lateral projection of lower shelf small but distinct (indistinct in E. trimaculata ). Further comparisons to specimens of E. trimaculata from various localities in Europe and molecular studies are needed to clarify the relationship between the two species.
