A new species and further records of quill mites (Acari: Cheyletoidea: Syringophilidae) parasitic on birds (Aves) in England Author Nattress, Barry Author Skoracki, Maciej text Zootaxa 2009 2133 49 54 journal article 10.5281/zenodo.188441 bda7442e-1b18-43c9-94f6-9ef394dedae9 1175-5326 188441 Syringophilopsis fringilla ( Fritsch, 1958 ) This species was described from Fringilla coelebs L. from Germany ( Fritsch 1958 ), and was recently reported from the type host from England ( Kethley 1970 ), Russia (Bochkov & Mironov 1998 ) and Poland (Skoracki 2004). The redescription of this species was provided by Skoracki (2004). In Fritsch’s paper, the author reported this species also from three passeriform host species: Carduelis carduelis (Fringillidae) , Passer montanus (Passeridae) , and Hirundo rustica (Hirundinidae) , all from Germany . Because all of Fritsch’s mite material is lost ( Kethley 1970 ) we were unable to examine specimens collected from the additional hosts. Additionally, whilst this species has previously been recorded in England ( Kethley 1970 ), the records have been lost (Dr. A. Baker , Natural History Museum, pers. comm.). Below we give data of S. fringilla from the type host in West Yorkshire, England . Material examined. Three females from secondary quills of the chaffinch Fringilla coelebs L. ( Passeriformes : Fringillidae ), England , Bradley near Keighley, 53°55’N , 1°59’W , 27 October 2005 , coll. D. Farr.
