Diagnosis.
This subspecies can be separated from the nominate one by the combination of the following characters: 1) on the forewing upperside the male brand is less prominent than that in the nominate subspecies; 2) the hindwing white discal band in spaces 1b to 3 on both sides is somewhat curved, whereas it is nearly straight in the nominate subspecies; 3) the upper half of the lamina of the androconium (
Fig. 31e
) is wider than in the nominate subspecies (
Fig. 31f
). The differential diagnosis with
Aulocera longanfua
is given in the diagnosis section of the latter, below.
Remarks.
Although the
type
localites of
Aulocera pygmaea vadimi
and the nominate subspecies are not far away from each other, their habitats are two isolated summits which means gene flow between the two populations is unlikely. Considering the morphological differences between the two taxa, this subspecies is retained as valid.
