Antirrhinum charidemi
Lange (1882: 99)
Type
(
lectotype
, designated here):—
[
SPAIN
, Almería,
Cabo
de Gata
] “Regnum Granatense, prov, Almeriensis in rupium fissuris in Sierra Cabo de Gata raro!
140–160 m
”,
Huter,
16 April 1879
(exsiccata Itinere Hispanico 1879),
Porta
& Rigo 77
, (C10018879, isolectotypes B 10 0296145, B 10 0296144, P04050360).
Fig. 1
.
Lange (1882: 99)
published the name
Antirrhinum charidemi
through a complete description and diagnosis. The protologue also includes gathering, indicated as: “In promontorio Charidemo (Cabo de Gata) frustula sterilia primus legit cl. Winkler
3 Apr. 1876
, dein specimina florigera
16 Apr. 1879
legerunt clarr. Huter,
Porta
et Rigo”.
Rothmaler (1956: 63)
mentioned as type: “Typus: Cabo de Gata (
Porta
et Rigo II, 272, W, WU, S, JE, P, GR; Isotypi)” and this typification was not discussed by Güemes (2009). On the other hand,
Sutton (1988: 76)
indicates the type as: “Type:
Spain
: Almería; Sierra Cabo de Gata,
100–200 m
,
v 1890
Porta
& Rigo 272 (holo. C, microfiche IDC-
2204/11/15
!, IDC-
2204/11/16
!, iso. BM! JE! K!). However, the types mentioned by
Rothmaler (1956: 63)
or
Sutton (1988: 76)
are ineffective being contrary to Art. 9.12 of the ICN, because this material does not belong to any of the two gatherings included in the protologue by Lange, and there is material (
syntypes
) of these two gatherings.
The gathering mentioned by Rothmaler and Sutton belong to a material collected by Pietro
Porta
and Gregorio Rigo, with the exsiccata number 272. Some specimens of this gathering are preserved at S (barcode S10-19871) and BR BR0000005423651. These herbarium sheets bear the same printed label: “Nº 272 /
Antirrhinum Charidemi Lange
n. sp.
1880. / Almeria, in rupium fissuris Sierra Cabo de Gata / sol. schistose
100–
200 m
.s.m. majo raro! /
Porta
et Rigo, iter II Hispanicum 1890.” Therefore, this material is post-protologue and is not original material used by Lange to describe
A. charidemi
.
There
are several specimens belonging to the two gatherings cited by
Lange
in the protologue.
An
herbarium sheet preserved at C C10018880, bears two vegetative plant fragments, and a label: “Herb. Jih. Lange / reise durch
Spanien
und
Portugal
/
Linaria
Antirrhinum
Charidemi Lge.
[handwritten by Lange] / Cabo de Gata / ¾ 1876
M. Winkler
”.
This
material was directly cited by
Lange
as “In promontorio Charidemo (Cabo de Gata) frustula sterilia primus cl. Winkler
3 Apr. 1876
”.
On
the other hand, there are several specimens belonging to the second gathering cited by
Lange
in the protologue as: “In promontorio Charidemo (Cabo de Gata) […] dein specimina florigera
16 Apr. 1879
legerunt clarr. Huter,
Porta
et Rigo” (e.g., C10018879 (see
Fig. 1
), B 10 0296145, B 10 0296144, P04050360). This material is labelled with the same printed label: “Nº 77 Huter,
Porta, Rigo
ex itinere hispanico 1879 /
Antirrhinum Charidemi Lge.
/ J.L. 1880 / Regnum Granatense, prov. Almeriensis in rupium / fisuris in Sierra Cabo de Gata raro! /
140–160 m
16 Aprili”. In this label, the annotation “Lge. / J.L. 1880” was handwritten by Lange
.
Therefore, the specimens C10018880, C10018879, B 10 0296145, B 10 0296144, and P04050360 are
syntypes
, and this material has preference in the
lectotype
designation among uncited specimens according to Art. 9.12 of the
ICN
. In conclusion, we designate as the
lectotype
of
Antirrhinum charidemi
the specimen most complete of the exsiccatum number 77 collected by
Huter,
Porta
and Rigo in 1879, the specimen C10018879 (
Fig. 1
). This specimen is consistent with the traditional concept and the current use of the name (e.g.,
Rothmaler 1956
,
Webb 1972
,
Sutton 1988
, Güemes 2009,
Güemes & Sánchez-Gómez 2009
).
