Akodon (Abrothrix) sanborni Osgood, 1943 , “mouth of Rio Inio, south end of Chiloe Island [= Isla Grande de Chiloé],” Los Lagos , Chile . Abrothrix sanborni is in the subgenus Abrothnix. Until recently, it encompasses two distinct lineages that now each rank as species; populations from northern Chiloe Island and adjacent mainland do not represent A. sanborni but rather A. manni. Most available literature referring to A. sanborni now relates to A. manni. Monotypic. Distribution. SC Chile, including C & S Chiloe I and EC Aysén Region. Descriptive notes. Sanborn’s Soft-haired Mouse is a small, with uniform blackish brown color including tail and feet; tail is ¢.80% of head— body length; and ears small and scantily haired. It resembles Mann’s Soft-haired Mouse (A. manni) in external and cranial appearance; minor differences in Sanborn’s Softhaired Mouse include darker color, with dark gray hairs and blackish to brownish tips; less contrasting gray tones of individual hairs on venter; rhinarium and lips covered by short, thin blackish hairs; and forefeet and hindfeet dorsally covered by short brown hairs. Coastal Valdivian rainforests and evergreen forest of Nothofagus dombeyi and N. betuloides (both Nothofagaceae ); Drimys winter: ( Winteraceae ); and Lomatia ferrugimea ( Proteaceae ) at elevations up to 800 m.
