One male ( LECTOTYPE , body length 4.5 mm, lacking cephalothorax): Ecuador , Banos , leg. April 1965 , N. Leleup , MNHN (VC) uncatalogued . Colour .`La coloration varie beaucoup entre les individus. Certains exemplaires sont... peu preÁs normalement coloreÂs, encore que la teinte geÂneÂrale soit claire, et les chromatophores largement disperseÂs. La coloration est plus intense dans la reÂgion peri-oculaire et sur le pleÂon que sur le reste du corps’ ( Vandel, 1968 ). Cephalothorax . The specimen examined lacks the cephalothorax, therefore, no additional comments can be given on this tagma nor its appendages. Pereon . Tegument slightly scaly, densely covered with modi®ed tricorn-like setae with the cuticular plaque distally broadening, apically terminated by semicircular serrate fringe, apparently, lateral margins and border of basal tricorn with stronger cuticle. Coxal plates of pereonites 1 to 5 distally rounded, medially slightly smaller in diameter than distally, coxal plates VI and VII distally pointed, with sulcus marginalis, noduli laterales and gland pores not discernible at 400 Ö magni®cation in situ (®gure 9, Cx4 ). Vandel (1968) described small noduli laterales on each coxal plate. Pleon . Slightly retracted from pereon, pleonites 3 to 5 with neopleurae, tegument covered with modi®ed tricorn-like setae, particularly on lateral margin of pleonite 5 and pleotelson of striking length, pleotelson with almost concave lateral margin, bearing two rows of tricorn-like setae along each margin. Appendages Pereopods . Rather slender (®gure 9, PE1 / 7 ), carpus more vigorous with antenna-groomin g brush on pereopod 1, composed of a central area of trichiform setae latero±proximally surrounded by a row of fasciculate cuticular scales; an ornamental sensory spine with serrate double-fringed apex (®gure 9, Sc1 ); carpus and propus with many tricorns, dactylus with intermediate inner claw, strong interungual seta and dactylar seta with plumose apex. Sexual dimorphism . No sexual dimorphism was indicated by Vandel (1968) . Pleopods . Endopodites of pleopods 3 to 5 not lobate, exopodites with some sensory spines latero±distally. No respiratory areas discernible (®gure 9, PL 1±5 ). Sexual diOEerentiation . Pleopod 1 exopodite almost subquadrangular with medial margin more rounded, endopodite straight, with row of spines on medio± caudal surface proximally ending at half-length from apex to interlocking area with genital papilla (®gure 9, PL 1 ). Pleopod 2 exopodite pyriform with three sensory spines latero±distally, endopodite slender, apically narrowed, obliquely truncate (®gure 9, PL 2 ). FIG. 9. Uropod . Protopodite triangular with lateral groove, endopodite inserting proximally of exopodite, exopodite almost twice as long as endopodite (®gure 9, UR ). Genital papilla . Similar to Caraiboscia . Remarks . Colombophiloscia alticola is the only species of this genus with pigment and compound eyes, which comprise four ommatidia each. It is easily discriminated from its congeners by these characters.
