Diagnosis.
A species of
C. pictus
-species group with a deep illicial trough; a short illicium stem that largely embedded in esca; cirri on esca black anteriorly and bright white posteriorly; GRii=8 or 9; and lateral-line neuromasts: BD=2, GH=10–13, BI=31–35. Body orange to reddish with irregular yellowish vermicular or spotty patterns; sometimes large blackish patches on dorsal surface.
Distribution.
This is a widespread species through Indo-west Pacific Ocean, from
Japan
to
New Zealand
and from
South Africa
to
French Polynesia
. Specimens from southern Africa were collected at depths
255–
484 m
.
