Eugenia naraveana
Cházaro & Franco-Gutiérrez, Phytotaxa
286(4): 292 (2016)
EOO:
0 km².
AOO:
4 km
².
Evaluation of IUCN:
Critically Endangered.
Eugenia naraveana
is known only in the vicinity of the “Cofre de Perote” volcano hills in
Veracruz
, growing in the Humid Montane Forest, with only the
type
of collection as the only record, being found from
2,100 to 2,600 m
elev. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) fall into the Critically Endangered category, under the criterion B. The habitat is highly impacted by agricultural activity and the extraction of native forest, but there have been efforts to restore vegetation since
2008 in
the region (
CONABIO 2018
,
Vázquez
et al
. 2014
). In addition, as an interesting data, there are numerous research describing the importance of the floristic biodiversity of this region as it contains ca. 1,500 vascular plants (
Castillo-Campos
et al
. 2009
, Sánchez-Vindas 1990, Rzedowski 1978,
Vázquez
et al
. 2014
). Regarding its restricted distribution related to only one location and an inferred continuing decline of habitat,
Eugenia naraveana
is here classified as Critically Endangered (CR), as it meets the criterion B2ab (iii). Further field surveys and information on population size, local threats and habitat trends are recommended, as well as monitoring.
