Family
Artemiidae Grochowski, 1895
Artemia franciscana
Kellog, 1906
. In older literature, only
Artemia salina
(Linnaeus, 1758)
is mentioned as this was considered a cosmopolitan species. Today, we know more existing
Artemia
species (
Assem
et al.
2010
). In
Bonaire
,
A. franciscana
Kellog, 1906
is present (
Van Stappen 1996
;
Camargo
et al.
2002
).All observations in the Dutch Caribbean of
A. salina
probably belong to
A. franciscana
.
Wagenaar Hummelinck (1933)
found this species in
Bonaire
(Goto-meer, Salinja Martinus, Pekelmeer, and Salinja Plenchi).
Rammner (1936)
reported this species for
Bonaire
,
Curaçao
, and St Maarten. In the period of
1960–1964
, several salt pans were sampled in
Bonaire
and
Curaçao
to investigate the ecology of this species (
Kristensen & Hulscher-Emeis 1972
).
Vanhaecke
et al.
(1987)
found it on St Maarten,
Aruba
,
Bonaire
(Duinmeer, Gotomeer, Pekelmeer, Martinus, and Slagbaai), and
Curaçao
(Fuik and Rifwater).
Van Stappen (1996)
reported
Artemia
spec. for St Maarten,
Aruba
,
Bonaire
, and
Curaçao
; only mentioning
A. franciscana
for Duinmeer on
Bonaire
. The hypersaline habitat in Rif-Sint Marie on
Curaçao
is threatened by the supply of sea water causing the lake to become less saline (
Vermeij & Chamberland 2012
).
