Mag. Nat. Hist., ser. 6, 14: 352 . Type Locality: Brazil , Rio de Janeiro State , Rio de Janeiro . Vernacular Names: Rusty Phaenomys . Distribution: Known only from a restricted area in the Serra do Mar, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo states, S Brazil . Conservation: IUCN – Endangered. Discussion: Known museum records (total = 11) consolidated by Maia Vaz (2000) , who noted that the species has not been collected within the last sixty years and commented on its conservation status. An individual collected in 1998, from Rio de Janeiro , brings the total to 12 and indicates that the species can persist even in slightly degraded habitat (Bonvicino et al., 2001).
