First recorded from Port Praslin, New Ireland as Holacanthus semicirculatus by Cuvier in Cuvier & Valenciennes (1831 : 191), based on MNHN material; reported as Holacanthus semi-circulatus by Lesson (1831 : 173, poissons pl. 30, fig. 3). A specimen photographed at Lissenung Island, Kavieng District, 10 m depth, by Dean Tully on 24 June 2013 . Distribution and habitat. New Ireland : 2, 3.—General distribution: Red Sea and East Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Samoa and Tonga , north to southern Japan , south to Western Australia , New South Wales ( Australia ) and New Caledonia . Juveniles found in tidal pools, semi-protected channels and on outer reef flats; adults under ledges and in caves of coral-rich lagoon and seaward reefs, 1–30 m depth. Marine.
