Dolichos unguiculatus
Linnaeus
,
Species Plantarum
2
: 725. 1753
.
"Habitat in Barbados." RCN: 5332.
Neotype
(Westphal,
Pulses Ethiopia, Taxon. Agric. Signif.
: 213. 1974):
Westphal 8682
(WAG;
iso-
K, P).
Current name:
Vigna unguiculata
(L.) Walp. subsp.
unguiculata
(
Fabaceae
:
Faboideae
).
Note:
Piper (in
Torreya
12: 190. 1912) interpreted this name via material in LINN (evidently sheet 900.5) identifiable as
Phaseolus antillanus
Urb.
, for which he substituted
P. unguiculatus
(L.) Piper
. However, as queried by Merrill (in
Trans. Amer. Philos. Soc.
, n.s., 24: 215. 1935), this is unannotated by Linnaeus and is not original material for the name. The absence of type material was noted by authors such as Fawcett & Rendle (
Fl. Jamaica
4: 69. 1920), and this uncertainty led some to reject it informally. See review by Westphal who provided a
neotype
for the name.
