Representatives of the genus Aulonastus are found inside feather quills of secondaries, coverts and only occasionally inside contour feathers. They are associated with passerines of the families Cardinalidae , Emberizidae , Fringillidae , Icteridae , Laniidae , Motacillidae , Prunellidae , Rhinocriptidae, Turdidae , and Troglodytidae . The Nearctic fauna comprises five of the 14 species described in this genus: A. emberizicus Skoracki et al ., 2010 , A. euphagus Skoracki et al ., 2010 , A. pipili Kethley, 1970 , A. pirangus Skoracki et al ., 2010 , and A. sturnellus Skoracki et al ., 2010 .
