RCN: 5415. Replaced synonym of: Vicia sativa L. var. nigra L. (1763) , nom. illeg. Lectotype (Lassen in Turland & Jarvis in Taxon 46: 483. 1997): [icon] " Vicia angustifolia " in Rivinus, Ordo Pl. Fl. Tetrapetal.: t. 55. 1691. - Epitype (Lassen in Turland & Jarvis in Taxon 46: 483. 1997): Sweden. Skane : Tjoernarp sn 400m NO kvarnen, RUBIN 3D 2c 07 47, 10 Jun 1992, S . Karlsson 921771 (LD). Current name: Vicia sativa L. subsp. nigra Ehrh. ( Fabaceae : Faboideae ). Note: Verdcourt (in Milne-Redhead & Polhill, Fl. Trop. E. Africa, Leguminosae 4: 1069. 1971) indicated a Haller specimen (P) as the lectotype . However, this cannot be regarded as relevant original material because Linnaeus is not known to have studied Haller's herbarium. Vicia sativa var. nigra is nomenclaturally superfluous under Arts 52.1 & 52.2, because Linnaeus included in its protologue all the material eligible as the lectotype of the earlier var. angustifolia (i.e. Rivinus' illustration). The current name, V. sativa subsp. nigra Ehrh. , is therefore to be treated as a nomen novum , rather than a new combination, based on the same type as var. nigra (Art. 58.1).
