Current name:
Vicia sativa
L. subsp.
nigra
Ehrh.
(
Fabaceae
:
Faboideae
).
Note:
Verdcourt (in Milne-Redhead & Polhill,
Fl. Trop. E. Africa, Leguminosae
4: 1069. 1971) indicated a Haller specimen (P) as the
lectotype
. However, this cannot be regarded as relevant original material because Linnaeus is not known to have studied
Haller's
herbarium.
Vicia sativa
var.
nigra
is nomenclaturally superfluous under Arts 52.1 & 52.2, because Linnaeus included in its protologue all the material eligible as the
lectotype
of the earlier
var.
angustifolia
(i.e.
Rivinus'
illustration). The current name,
V. sativa
subsp.
nigra
Ehrh.
, is therefore to be treated as a
nomen novum
, rather than a new combination, based on the same type as
var.
nigra
(Art. 58.1).
