Hu (1950
c) stated that
I. wardii
is closely related to
I. forrestii
, but the latter “differs in having larger subcoriaceous, subentire leaves ([5–] 8–9 [–11] × [1.5–] 3 [–3.5] vs. 2–9 ×
1–3 cm
) and large elliptic pyrenes (2 ×
1 mm
vs. 1.5 ×
0.5 mm
) with pointed ends.” The key to these two species, however, runs “leaves…
5–10 cm
long, the lower half entire, the rest subentire, the lateral nerves 10–12 pairs” (
I. forrestii
); “leaves…… sharply serrate,
4–6 cm
long, the lateral nerves 8 (7) or 8 pairs” (
I. wardii
). I observed and measured leaves of seven of the collections of
I. forrestii
used by her, with the result as follows: leaves are
6.7–11.5 cm
long,
3.2–3.8 cm
wide; nerves 9–11 pairs; lower half to lower 1/8 entire. I observed and measured three of the collections of
I. wardii
used by her and the result is: leaves
6–9.5 cm
long,
2.2–3 cm
wide; nerves 9–11 pairs; lower 1/3–1/8 entire. The “differences” given in Hu’s key are different from those given in her statement. It is clear that the characters used by Hu for distinguishing the two “species” vary continuously.
