Description
. ♂.
Head.
Palp, other mouthparts and face yellow, posterior parts of head light brownish. Antenna brownish, scape, pedicel and base of 1st flagellomere yellow. 1st flagellomere about
3x
its width, 2nd flagellomere
2x
its width.
Thorax.
Pronotum yellow, with 4 long setae. Scutum yellow with 3 brownish longitudinal stripes. Anepisternum and preepisternum yellow. Scutellum yellowish, with 4 long setae. Laterotergite yellowish. Mediotergite yellowish, bare.
Wing.
Length 4.0 mm. Wing hyaline. Sc ending in C near middle of small cell, Sc2 ending in R1 distad of middle of small cell. Apical part of Sc bearing 10 small setae. Small cell about 1.5x as long as wide. Cu fork below M fork. M ratios: 0.48, 0.60. Cu ratios: 0.87, 1.33. Small setae: M petiole: 0; M1: +; M2: +; Cu petiole: +; Cu1: +; Cu2: +. Halter pale yellowish, apex brownish.
Legs.
Coxae and femora yellow, tibiae and tarsi brownish to brown. Coxa 2 with relatively short, shorter than half of coxa 2, curved spur. Spur with 1 small apical tooth. Leg ratios: bt1:t1 =? (structure missing), bt2:t2 = 0.70, bt3:t3 = 0.42.
Abdomen.
Tergites 1–5 yellow, with brown dorsal line and posterior margins, 6–7 brownish to brown. Sternites 1–5 yellow, 6–7 brownish.

Wing length
4.2 mm
. Thorax yellow to yellowish. Colouration of abdomen as in ♂. Leg ratios: bt1:t1 = 1.09, bt2:t2 = 0.73, bt3:t3 = 0.62. Terminalia yellow. Hypogynal valve triangular, apically tapered, with several setae. Apical segment of cercus oval.
Discussion.
Mycomya shimai
belongs to the subgenus
Calomycomya
(based on the presence of the curved spur of the coxa 2 and the tergal fork of the hypopygium) and is the only known representative of the subgenus from the South East Asian islands.
Calomycomya
is a widely distributed subgenus in the Palaearctic, Nearctic and Neotropical regions, with three species known from the Himalayas (
Väisänen 2013a
). It differs from the other species of the subgenus in the almost H-shaped tergal fork with lateral lobes curved inwards (
Figs. 7
A, 7C–D) and in its characteristic gonostylus, with two long, slender branches (
Fig. 7
G).
Etymology.
The species is named after the Japanese entomologist M. Shima, who collected the
holotype
.
