Remarks
Originally described from the USA: ‘New York, 3; St. Catharine Island, Georgia, 3; Florida, 7’ <the digits refer to the number of specimens in the original
type
series>; the
holotype
of
S
.
sectilifer
: ‘District of Columbia’.
Stenus teter
was described from Florida. Terra typica of
S. illustris
: Mexico; of
S
.
odius
: Cuba, Soledad near Cienfuegos. Acting as first reviser,
Casey (1892)
himself synonymized
S. sectilifer
with
S
.
milleporus
. However,
Bernhauer & Schubert (1911)
mistakenly regarded
S
.
milleporus
as a junior synonym of
S. sectilifer
, and this treatment was repeated by
Puthz (1972a)
when placing
S. teter
,
S. illustris
,
and
S. odius
in the synonymy of
S. sectilifer
. Under Articles 24.2.1 and 24.2.2 of ICZN, the valid name for the species under consideration is
Stenus milleporus
Casey, 1884
.
