The Panchaetothripinae (Thysanoptera, Thripidae) of Brazil, with one new Caliothrips species Author Lima, Élison Fabrício Bezerra 0000-0002-6361-0928 Author O’Donnell, Cheryle Ann 0000-0002-2260-9998 https: // orcid. org / 0000 - 0002 - 2260 - 9998 Author Miyasato, Elisa Aiko 0000-0002-6361-0928 https: // orcid. org / 0000 - 0002 - 5710 - 0905 Author Br, Pi. text Zootaxa 2020 2020-07-28 4820 2 201 230 journal article 8929 10.11646/zootaxa.4820.2.1 b2e5c0b0-2582-4a40-8bc8-3d416772ed35 1175-5326 4397490 340C25FD-6DD4-482F-A5F9-40715B4FA206 Caliothrips punctipennis (Hood) ( Figs 12 , 38, 49 , 84, 85 , 100 ) Heliothrips punctipennis Hood, 1912: 135 . Heliothrips marginipennis Hood, 1912: 135 syn. n. The synonymy given above is based on the examination of type specimens and additional material deposited in USNM, ANIC and CHNUFPI. Caliothrips punctipennis is commonly collected from grasses, and has the fore wings extensively pale. It has been considered to have brown pigmentation only on the veinal fork and fore wing apex, whereas C. marginipennis was considered to exhibit additional brown pigmentation posteriorly on the fore wing. Examination of specimens collected in various parts of the world, however, revealed that the extent of brown fore wing pigmentation is variable both within and between populations. Specimens collected in the State of Acre ( Brazil ) and Texas ( USA ) match C. punctipennis except for the wing color brown only at apex, whereas Acrean specimens have legs and tergites slightly different from C. punctipennis type series ( Figs. 85 , 100 ). Additional individuals deposited in ANIC collected from grasses in the State of Pernambuco ( Brazil ), Japan and Thailand also display wing color variation, with fore wing fork of veins from extensively dark to scarcely visible. Moreover, specimens including the types identified as C. marginipennis have this same intraspecific variation in color on the fore wings ( Figs. 12 , 84 ). Finally, Heliothrips bishoppi Moulton and Heliothrips bromi Moulton , are junior synonyms of C. marginipennis , and the first one was originally described as similar to C. punctipennis based on the characters previously discussed. These variations are, therefore, considered to be intraspecific. The two named species under discussion herein were published by Hood (1912) in the same paper, although the author did not compare C. marginipennis with C. punctipennis . As the characters used to describe the species seem to vary, as discussed above, we suggest their synonymization. Following recomendation 24A of ICZN, the name chosen herein to be the senior synonym is Caliothrips punctipennis (Hood) because (i) the type series is more numerous and covers two countries ( Mexico and USA ); (ii) records in literature are more numerous using that name; and (iii) the name has page priority in Hood (1912) . Character states of this variable species include antennal segments III–IV with apical half brown and V pale with light brown apex; extra simple sense cone on antennal segment IV sometimes extending to mid of segment V to apex of VI ( Fig. 38 ). Abdominal tergites reticulate (either transverse or longitudinal) on lateral two thirds with internal markings, III–VIII with faint or no reticulation medially ( Fig. 100 ), and pleurotergites with longitudinal striations. Males have transverse pore plates on sternites III–VII. NEW RECORD. Brazil . Acre : Rio Branco , 3 females on bamboo leaves, 25.vii.2019 , ( E.F.B.Lima and E.A.Miyasato) (CHNUFPI).
