Austrotinodes carioca
,
new species
(
Figs 1
A–1E)
Diagnosis.
The male of
Austrotinodes carioca
sp. nov.
is most similar to that of
A. longispinum
Thomson & Holzenthal 2010
and
A. belchioris
Thomson & Holzenthal
2010
in having each intermediate appendage bifid basally with a long dorsal and a short ventral branches. The new species and
A. longispinum
can be distinguished from
A. belchioris
by the straight dorsal branch and shorter basoventral branch. Furthermore, in
A. carioca
sp. nov.
the basoventral branch is longer and projected caudomesad as viewed dorsally while in
A
.
longispinum
it is projected caudoventrad. It differs also in the general structure of the lateral process of the phallus:
Austrotinodes carioca
sp. nov.
has 1 stout ventrolateral seta near the base, 1 long slender seta at mid-length, and the dorsal branch is elongate and bearing 1 apical slender seta;
A. longispinum
has only 1 slender, extremely long ventrolateral seta and a short dorsal branch bearing 1 small apical spinelike seta.
Description.
Adult
. Length of each forewing
4.6 mm
(n = 1). In alcohol, general color golden brown, with golden brown sclerites; antennae light yellow, dorsum of head dark golden brown, with pale yellow and dark brown setae; thorax golden brown dorsally, light yellow ventrally; legs yellow with brown setae; wings pale brown, forewings with fine pale brown setae dorsally. Forewings with R1 forked apically, forks II-V present; hind wings with forks II, III and V and discoidal cell open.
Male genitalia
. Segment IX deeply divided posterolaterally; sternum elongate anteriorly, in lateral view constricted at mid-length, ventral margin almost straight; in ventral view longer than wide, lateral margins slightly concave, apical margin almost straight, and anterior margin deeply excised. Phallic guide dark, sclerotized, elevated above inferior appendages; in lateral view strongly arched, base broad, apex rounded, reaching mid-length of inferior appendages. Inferior appendages fused mesally, attached apicomesally to sternum IX; in lateral view short, subquadrate, apex subtruncated; in ventral view inferior appendages long, directed laterad, posterior margin of each appendage weakly concave, with short, mesal, U-shaped incision between them. Tergum X divided into pair of semimembranous oval lobes, bearing slender dorsal setae; in lateral view rounded. Preanal appendages long, surface setose, dorsal margin slightly crenulate, slightly broader basally, apex rounded. Intermediate appendages long, almost same length as preanal appendages; in lateral view each with long, rod-like dorsal branch curved dorsad near apex and bearing 1 short subapical seta, short basoventral branch with 1 short apical seta; in dorsal view basoventral branch projected posteromesad. Phallus strongly enclosed between the lobes of tergum X (better observed in dorsal view); phallobase sclerotized and apicoventral region membranous, lateral process long, bifid, each half with dorsal and ventral processes, without basomesal process, ventral branch very short and bearing 1 long and stout ventrolateral seta near base; 1 long and slender seta at mid-length; dorsal branch long and with 1 slender apical seta.
