Prosphaerosyllis brevicirra (
Hartmann-Schroeder
, 1960)
Sphaerosyllis brevicirra
Hartmann-Schroeder
, 1960
Notes
Questionable status. Records of
Sphaerosyllis brevicirra
from the Western Mediterranean by
Alos
(1989)
and from the Aegean Sea (
Simboura 1996
,
Cinar
1999
) belong to an undescribed
Prosphaerosyllis
species (
San
Martin
2003
).
Faulwetter et al. (2011a)
examined the holotype of
Prosphaerosyllis brevicirra
from the Red Sea and found that the species bears a conspicuous papilla on each dorsal cirrus. All descriptions and illustrations of
Prosphaerosyllis brevicirra
from the Mediterranean lack these papillae. In addition, these specimen descriptions differ from
Prosphaerosyllis brevicirra
by the absence of dorsal cirri on chaetiger 2 (reported as present by
Alos
(1989)
but in fact absent (
San
Martin
2003
) and by thicker aciculae.
