Remarks.
The females of
M
.
quadrinotatus
are distinguished from those of other
Merodon
species by the following combination of characters: body length at least
12 mm
; antenna black; scutum with long blackish pile between wing bases; legs entirely black; mid coxa bare posteriorly; abdomen black, with blackish pile; tergites 3–4 with a pair of whitish medial patches of pile; abdominal tergites without pollinose fasciae. This species was collected on the southern slopes of Zagros Mountains. The female
holotype
of this species is from
Iraq
.
Hurkmans (1993)
examined a second female from
Turkey
. To date the male remains unknown.
