Diagnosis.
The following combination of characters readily separates the Macaronesian species of
Limnophora
from other
Muscidae
: Small to medium sized muscids with paired subtriangular or trapezoid dark marks on tergites III and IV. Dorsocentral setae 3 or 4 behind the suture. Katepisternal setae 1 + 2. Prestomal teeth enlarged, modified for stabbing small prey. Prealar seta absent. Prosternum with setulae. Wing vein R

bare; radial node with dorsal and ventral setula(e). Ovipositor with complex hypoproct consisting of a large basal part with a pair of vertical extensions and a convex distal part covered in dense, up-curved setulae or spinules.
