Osteocheilus sarawakensis
Karnasuta 1993
Holotype—FMNH 94182 (
Fig. 2
).
Karnasuta (1993)
, as well as his original thesis, list “FMNH…..” as the catalog number for the
holotype
. Correspondence shows the catalog number FMNH 94182 was to be assigned for this specimen (
138.5mm
SL), and this is the correct FMNH catalog number for the
holotype
of
O
.
sarawakensis
.
Paratypes—FMNH 44737. N=2, as published.
FMNH 68530.
Karnasuta (1993)
lists
20 specimens
as
paratypes
in this lot, as does Karnasuta’s original thesis (1981). Upon examination of correspondence at the time of the loan transaction, it seems apparent
Karnasuta (1993)
likely took the count of 20 from FMNH 68908, which was listed on the next line of correspondence regarding the request of catalog numbers for newly designated
type
specimens. Fifty specimens, instead of 20, were sent on loan to Karnasuta and included in correspondence regarding the number of specimens to be included as
paratypes
in FMNH 68530. All individuals in FMNH 68530 are confirmed as
O
.
sarawakensis
, and this lot should now be 50 instead of 20
paratype
specimens. The remaining
37 specimens
of
O
.
sarawakensis
originally in FMNH 68530 are now FMNH 126071 (nontypes).
FMNH 68531. N=1, as published.
FMNH 68534.
Karnasuta (1993)
, as well as his original thesis, lists two separate entries of FMNH 68534, designating both jars as
paratypes
, with the same catalog number. Based on FMNH records, this lot originally consisted of three specimens and was never loaned out or referenced in loan transaction correspondence. Indeed FMNH 68534 includes 3
paratype
specimens, a combination of the two entries listed separately in
Karnasuta (1993)
.
FMNH 68535. N=2, as published.
FMNH 68536. N=2, as published.
FMNH 68537. N=1, as published.
FMNH 68538. N=5. Correspondence between Karnasuta and FMNH Division of Fishes indicates the five specimens in this lot were to be designated as
paratypes
. However, given this lot was not listed as
paratypes
in
Karnasuta (1993)
, the five specimens in this lot are considered non-type material for
O
.
sarawakensis
.
FMNH 68539. N=1, as published.
FMNH 68882. This specimen was not loaned out to Karnasuta, nor is it mentioned in any archived correspondence. However,
Karnasuta (1993)
lists a
paratype
specimen of
O
.
sarawakensis
as “FMNH 6882” with matching count, standard length, and locality data as FMNH 68882. In addition, Karnasuta’s thesis (1981) correctly lists the
paratype
specimen as FMNH 68882. This appears to be an error in
Karnasuta (1993)
, and the correct catalog number for this
paratype
is indeed FMNH 68882.
FMNH 68906.
Karnasuta (1993)
and Karnasuta (1981) list incorrect data and numbers of specimens. This seems likely due to confusion with locality data of FMNH 68908 and count data of FMNH 68538, the next entries in archived correspondence. Nine specimens (not five) were loaned out and indicated as
paratypes
in correspondence. All specimens were received together (seven fluid specimens and one cleared and stained specimens—one cleared and stained specimen is missing). Thus, the count of this lot of
paratypes
should be nine instead of five.
FMNH 68908.
Karnasuta (1993)
, as well as his original thesis, lists seven specimens in FMNH 68908 as
paratypes
of
O
.
sarawakensis
. Correspondence regarding catalog numbers for the 1993 publication indicates that
20 specimens
were to be designated as
paratypes
in this lot. Indeed
20 specimens
from the lot were loaned to Karnasuta for study. It is likely the published count of 7 was from FMNH 68906, the next line in correspondence. The count of this lot of
paratypes
should be 20 instead of seven.
FMNH 68892. N=7, as published.
FMNH 68912. N=1, as published.
Paratopotypes—Karnasuta (1993) lists “FMNH…..” with a count of 49 as paratopotypes. Based on archived correspondence, the catalog number of this lot is FMNH 68532 (N=49). The additional
34 specimens
originally in FMNH 68532 were designated as topotypes per correspondence (now FMNH 126070).
