. The presence of both hymenial, capitate cystidia and enclosed, tubular to moniliform cystidia with homogenous contents strongly stained by cotton blue, make this species morphologically reminiscent of
Xylodon brevisetus
and
X. tuberculatus
.
X. pumilius
differs from both by a smooth hymenium and thick-walled basidiospores.
