Nomenclatural notes
:—Bentham cited one gathering,
Hartweg 499
, in the protologue with no herbarium or accession numbers specified. We were able to trace
two specimens
of
Hartweg 499
: K barcode K000585745, LD barcode 1212266. These specimens completely agree with the protologue and can be safely considered as original material (Art. 9.3. of the ICN,
McNeill
et al
. 2012
). The
Hartweg
499
specimen at K (K barcode K000585745) is selected here as the
lectotype
for the name
Solanum piliferum
.
Taxonomic notes
:—
Lycianthes pilifera
is a Mexican endemic that occurs in the states of
Veracruz
and
Oaxaca
. It is distinguished by its brownish, simple, acute trichomes and showy flowers with white to purple entire corollas and equal stamens. The lustrous, dark purple fruits with large dark seeds are also unusual.
