Gymnodactylus amarali is distributed in the eastern portion of Cerrado and in open vegetation enclaves of southeastern Amazonia ( Fig. 2 ). It is endemic to Brazil , where it is known from the states of Tocantins, Mato Grosso, Goiás, Maranhão, Piauí, Bahia (Cerrado), and Pará (Amazonian region). Gymnodactylus amarali is terrestrial/semifossorial and diurnal, inhabits both cerrado vegetation and rocky fields ( campos rupestres ), where it is usually found under rocks, in rock crevices, inside (holes) of termite nests, and occasionally moving on the ground ( Colli et al. 2003 —identified as G. geckoides amarali ; Vitt et al. 2007—identified as G. carvalhoi ).
