Family
Bufonidae Gray, 1825
Remarks:
Frost et al. (2006)
proposed a monophyletic taxonomy for several bufonid clades, such as
Rhaebo
for the
Bufo guttatus
species group,
Rhinella
for the
Bufo margaritifer
species group, and
Chaunus
for a number of other South American species groups of
Bufo
.
Chaparro et al. (2007)
embedded the genus
Chaunus
within
Rhinella
.
Bufo nasicus
shown to be basal to
Rhaebo
by implication; however, implication is not a resolution, but merely implicates the need for elucidation and further evidence. Barrio-Amorós (2009) supposed
Bufo nasicus
to be a member of
Rhinella
based on external characters and transferred it to that genus without further clarification. Barrio-Amorós and Castroviejo-Fisher (2008a) considered
Rhaebo anderssoni
a synonym of
R. guttatus
. Genus
Dendrophryniscus
Jiménez de la Espada, 1870
was split by
Fouquet et al. (2012a)
, and the Amazonian-Guianan clade was then named
Amazonella
.
Fouquet et al. (2012b)
realized that
Amazonella
was a preoccupied unavailable name according to the Code and proposed
Amazophrynella
as a replacement name for the clade.
